“I am very proud and yet humbled at the same time to be recognized by my peers in this way … it means a lot” so says Dr.Duck.

“Dr. Duck’s Guitar Prescription Radio Show” is all about guitar players, style,s and music.

Based in Las Vegas, the weekly program is hosted by John(Dr Duck)Duck, who invented “Dr. Duck’s Ax Wax & String Lube,” the guitar cleaning/polishing formula, and whose company produces guitar accessories and distributes them globally.

The show is co-produced by KUNV 91.5 Las Vegas, Nevada.

Each show has a “party” atmosphere; episodes (dosages) are 58 minutes, plus holes for sponsors. Content is evergreen, with no seasons, dates or current events mentioned… except for the “Christmas Party” show

Even if you haven’t heard John Duck’s name, you’ve likely heard his voice raining down silky introductory remarks from the VivaVision canopy P.A. system at Fremont Street Experience. He also provided, at one time, the “Howdy, Pardner!” drawled every 15 minutes by Vegas Vic, that Joker-faced neon cowboy colossus looming over the same covered block.

Duck’s moved up to complete paragraphs since then; as of early January, the L.A.-born smooth-talker has been producing “Dr. Duck’s Guitar Prescription,” an hour long celebration of all things guitar, played every Monday morning at the stroke of midnight on KUNV-FM 91.5. Turns out, the voice of downtown Vegas is also founder of Duck’s Deluxe online guitar and guitar accessories store, as well as a devoted ax-man with 45 years of playing experience and a respect for anyone else who’s ever treated the instrument with noisy love and reverence.

“It goes in and out of all genres,” he says, “but there’s a number of [more commercial] things you’re not gonna hear on the show, and a lot of people don’t understand why … If you have to ask the question, you’re probably not gonna understand the answer.”

No Dashboard Confessional, he means.

In between tunes both ingrained and obscure, “Dr. Duck’s Guitar Prescription” features trivia, quotes and a dose of Duck’s own off-the-cuff commentary and historical perspective. Guitar-centric jokes, too, like this one: How do you get a guitar player off your front porch? Pay for the pizza.

Just ducky Vegas’ radio doctor prescribes diverse recipe of guitar heroics.

John Duck was 10 years old when he first heard Duane Eddy’s 1958 hit “Reble Rouser.” He knew right then he’d found his calling. “It was like getting hit by a grenade,” Duck recalls. “My parents had a guitar around, and I knew a few chords, but I actually sat down and made sense of that song. You’ve got that sax in the back while the guitarist does that growl/twang thing, and the solo is just obscene. I haven’t been the same since.”

Fifty years later, he remains a devoted guitar-music listener. Every Sunday night at midnight, the Vegas-based Duck bestows his instrumental adoration onto audiences in his hometown and some 15 additional markets in the form of Dr. Duck’s Guitar Prescription, an hour of guitar-based music blending genres.

“I’ve just got to respect it to play it,” says Duck, who began broadcasting his weekly guitar “doses” in January on his show’s home station, KUNV 91.5-FM, directly after local mainstay The Lyon’s Den. “There’s a lot of commercial stuff that’s probably not gonna make it onto the show, and there are tunes from certain artists that you won’t expect.”

Show No. 2, for example, placed rockers Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Jeff Beck and Guns N’ Roses alongside old-timers Link Wray and Bo Diddley, jazzman Charlie Byrd, country player Vince Gill and flamenco/fusion maestro Ottmar Liebert. “We’re all over the map,” he acknowledges proudly. “A guy in Great Britain sent in a CD, and it’s strong. So we’re going to fit him in, right between Django Reinhardt and Herb Ellis.”

Between songs, the program relies on pre-recorded sounds—a background party going on…

As a guitarist, Duck, in his words, “played with a number of people and came pretty close to making it,” but that’s in the past. These days, the good doctor is happiest when he’s prescribing a heavy diet of guitar over the airwaves, and describing his handpicked tunes with enthusiastic gusto: “‘Smoke on the Water’ … it’s a nasty lick … the way it comes on is just like a Tyrannosaurus Rex just walked into your living room and he’s having a bad hair day.” – Las Vegas Weekly / Spencer Patterson
